|
This figure is a representation of Afonso de Albuquerque during the conquest of Malaca in 1511 and was inspired on the painting of Ernesto Condeixa (1903).
Most contemporary paintings of Albuquerque are said to have been painted based on descriptions so their accuracy is also very limited. Albuquerque wears a Corslet and mail armour to protect his chest and arms. He carries a sword and dagger typical of the Portuguese navigators of the XV and XVI centuries. He dresses with red breeches and cow skin boots. The fashion of long beards was started by pope Júlio II ). This fashion was welcomed by the Portuguese navigators that rarely shaved when at sea due to the scarcity of water.
